One thing I did not talk about yesterday was the incredible win by the USA in the inaugural Women’s Box Lacrosse championships. The state produced two members of the squad in Ransom Everglades grad Erin Bakes and Winter Springs alum Molly Garrett. Their 10-7 championship game win over Canada was thrilling to watch, as the USA overcame a 7-5 lead with about 8 minutes to play, scoring the last 5 goals to pull the game out.
The two Floridians played different roles, albeit highly effectively, as Molly was tasked with the defensive chores and Erin had an amazing offensive performance, being rewarded with a place on the Women’s World Team, akin to the 1st Team All-Tournament. Erin finished with 22G/17A in 7 games, which I believe led Team USA. Molly also served as an assistant coach at Bishop Moore this past season, so her roots are quite strong in the state. Those of you who attended the USA South Florida HOF Dinner know of my fondness for Erin’s career and she contributed to our Instagram account during the event.
Congratulations to both of you and now we have another great event to look forward to in future years.
