The Great 8

*

Hockey fans know that the Great 8 refers to Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals, who is closing in on the all-time goals scored record for a career, chasing Wayne Gretzky, also termed in his day as The Great Gretzky.

There’s potentially another Great 8 this year on the Girl’s side, as a team in that spot has gone pretty much un-noticed this season. How would you feel if you were the 8th-ranked team in your Class in the entire state, but you were likely not getting a home game in your district semifinal? That the two teams ahead of you in that district are not only #1 and #2 in the class, but in the entire state?

Well, here it is . . .

Yes, that team resides in West Palm Beach.

Meet King’s Academy.

King’s isn’t completely unfamiliar to such a spot. The Boys team in 2020 was featured by me earlier in the season, and last year the Girls went 14-3, losing twice to SA and in the Region 4 first round to Benjamin by 2. Benjamin was then eliminated by 1 in the semis.

This year’s team came in with a lot of experience returning, albeit without a few key pieces, like goalie Lucy Dailey, who is at Drexel now. There are no stats listed for 2024, so I can’t fully give the amount lost to graduation.

This year they are 12-2, having lost the first game to SA and a one-goal loss to SJP, while holding victories over last year’s 2A Final Four Stoneman, as well as Riverview-Sarasota. They just swept an Orlando trip and finish with St Edward’s at home on Tuesday to end the regular season.

There are no stats this year either, or a roster posted. But they deserve the credit for what is going on this year. Given the possibility of another quality win next week, getting to #6 in 1A isn’t out of possibility.

But they still have to deal with a District nightmare . . . good luck!
